Sierratel launches 3G CDMA

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Sierra Leone’s telecom incumbent operator Sierratel, a state-owned fixed line operator made a technological breakthrough by launching 3G CDMA operations in a long time devastated country. In fact, the event was so special that the president of Sierra Leone who attended the ceremony describe it as a milestone towards development.
The prooject began in 2008 when the China Import-Export (Exim) Bank accepted to fund the upgrade of national existing infrastructure with an extra 100,000 lines in Freetown and 14 other cities. This led to a network equipment delivery worth USD16.5 million from the chinese government as a loan. The network has been in deployment since june 2008 by the chinese equipment vendor Huawei who began the testing as well in third quarter 2008.
