Cantv plans to offer pay TV in 2010

According to a statement from Venezuela’s government, the state-owned operator Cantv plans to offer pay TV services in 2010. The company expects to provide the service through fixed infrastructure and satellite technology. Cantv’s  president Franco Silva declared that the company, which had already deployed 1,666 satellite stations nationwide, expects to provide communications services to the national market and other countries across the region through the Venesat-1 satellite.

China Unicom partners with China Unionpay on mobile payments

China Unicom and China Unionpay have entered into a strategic partnership to develop mobile payment services for the leading Chinese operator. According to the agreement announced yesterday, China Unicom’s subscribers will be able to use China Unionpay to transfer money among participating banks and make payments.

A China Unicom source noted: “China Unicom and China Unionpay are jointly researching a number of payment services, including RFID (radio frequency identification) mobile SIM card, fixed-line and Internet payment options. Payment service trials are currently being conducted in Shandong Province, Sichuan Province and Shanghai Municipality and an official national launch is projected for the second half of 2010″
