Global mobile handsets shipments up 14% in Q409

According to Dataxis Intelligence’s latest updates, global mobile handsets shipments have reached 330 million units in Q409 up 6% from a year ago and 14% more than in Q309. As expected, Nokia still leads the market with 127 million devices shipped, followed by Samsung, the rising South Korean giant, which claims 69 million devices shipment in the reported quarter. As for the smartphone niche market, Dataxis estimates converged devices shipments to have reached 52 million units in the quarter, up 13% on a quarterly basis. Nokia kept its leadership here as well with a 40% market share while RIM positioned itself  at the  second place with a slighltly over 19% market share followed closer by Apple with a 17% share.

Time Warner Cable returns profits in Q409

time_warner_cableTime Warner Cable published fourth quarter of 2009 results and announced a growth in revenues and profits. Revenues grew 3% to $4.5 billion on the quarter. Net income Attribuable to TWC was $322 million compared to a loss of $8.16 billion during the previous year period.

Concerning operating results, the company lost 105.000 video subscribers but digital subcribers grew by 56.000 subscribers. The growth in  revenues this quarter is explained by this continued growth in digital video subscribers, the increase in DVR service revenues and the video price increases. However, TWC said that the number of VoD transactions declined this quarter.

Glenn Britt, CEO of Time Warner Cable, said : “We enter 2010 with a strong business and a strong balance sheet, and we are very pleased to demonstrate confidence in our free cash flow by initiating a meaningful quarterly dividend. In the year ahead, we are excited about the investments we are making to drive further growth, and we expect to execute with the same discipline our investors have come to expect. We are well positioned to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Flat screens: Samsung exceeds 10 mln sales in a quarter

Samsung Electronics has reported strong profits in the fourth-quarter of 2009, reaching 3.1 trillion won ($2.7bn;£1.7bn),  thanks to increased sales of flat screen televisions and mobile phones.

Samsung sold nearly 11 million flat screen televisions in the period, and thus became the first manufacturer to exceed 10 million sales in a quarter.

Samsung said it expects strong demand in 2010 due to economic recovery, emerging market growth, and major sporting events
