Vietnamese Pay TV on the rise

Monday, May 10th, 2010

VietnamThe Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA), held a seminar in Hanoi about Vietnam’s Pay TV industry.

This seminar brought together more than 200 Vietnamese industry decision makers and government officials. Vietnam is one of the fastest developing markets, with 85 million population under the age of 30 years and a Pay TV market of 4.2 million subscribers, the opportunities are huge.

The Pay TV market is threatened by piracy in Vietnam. CASBAA estimated the cost of Pay TV piracy at US$15million in 2009, a substantial increase is expected for 2010. Manuel Rougeron, Exectutive Director of VSTV, the joint venture of Vietnam Television and Canal+ Group, said : “Regulators must ensure that the legal framework is truly robust supporting the 2009 copyright infringement legislation of 2009. It must also, most essentially, be transparent. Vietnam is now integrated into the world economy and the Vietnamese and international copyright regimes must be enforced together”.
