Mobile subscribers approach 100 million in Vietnam

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Vietnam approaches the 100 million mobile subscribers mark. 90 percent of these subscribers are using phone cards. They must declared their personal information but mobile operators have no way to confirm the real identity of the subscriber.

This impressive figure can be explained by the fact that the Ministry of Information and Communications have issued a decision permitting each individual to register up to three mobile numbers per one mobile network. It means that a person can have up to 21 numbers, with the seven mobile operators (27 with the 2 new entrants).

It is very difficult to control over 90 million subscribers because many of them have more than 3 numbers, so subscribers have to re-declare their personal information. If they don’t, their information will be deleted from the databases.
