TVE continues to negociate advertising, despite the law prohibiting it

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

RTVE is forced to stop advertising under the new law on public television financing. However, this measure will not take effect until its publication in the Official Gazette in September. Until then, the channel continues to contract because the total elimination is expected in January when the channel ends all its contracts. The public channel already contracted 860.000 seconds of advertising and negociated another 500.000 seconds.

The new law was claimed but private broadcasters, who accuse the public television to compete unfairly by having two sources of funding. Those criticisms have been multiplied with the crisis in the advertising market that fell at around 30%. With this measure, Spain joins France public channel that did not issue advertisements since January.
This law also limits the investment in sports right to 10% of the budget. The margin of maneuver is very limited for this part.
