StarHub launches HSPA+ network in Singapore

Monday, March 30th, 2009

StarHub, a leading mobile network operator in Singapore, has announced on 27th of March its willingness to launch APAC’s first HSPA+ services in domestic market by end of April 2009.

This will enable customers to surf the internet with speeds up to 21Mbps downlink and 11.5Mbps uplink as they are delivered through the HSPA+ technology which is an enhanced version of HSPA. According to the company’s officials, mobile broadband services through HSPA+ are targeted to both business and individual customers who can access the service through a $67 monthly subscription and by acquiring the Huawei USB dongle needed to achieve the 21Mbps speed at $200 on its own, before bundled packages which are expected to cost lower being made public.

It is important to state here that StarHub rolled-out its HSDPA network since august 2007 and since then has been delivering mobile broadband services under the MaxMobile plan which registered about 57, 000 subscribers as end of 2008 according to Dataxis Intelligence. If the new services are launched as projected, StarHub will become then the first operator worldwide to commercialise HSPA+ services ahead of Australia’s Telstra and Austria’s Telekom Group as both annouced their plan to launch such services but are still to reveal when.
