WiMAX not really crushed by LTE

Monday, March 9th, 2009

In recent days, much have been said about the potential of LTE to outpace Wimax as next generation networks standard and this has been fuelled by news such as the Nokia choice for LTE, Alcatel-Lucent shifting from Wimax, Nortel quitting the segment at such a point that one may believe that the days of Wimax are counted. Apparently not yet, the game is far from over and Wimax pros begun to respond as suggests a report by In-Stat predicting a dominance of Wimax by 2013 with approximately 82 million PCs connected while LTE will barely reach 23 million by that time. According to In-Stat, two main reasons could justify this prediction; Wimax is mostly deployed by telcos which regards it as an enhanced DSL service combining both the fixed broadband service with some form of nomadic coverage, where as early adopters of LTE are MNOs intending to increase capacity and peak rates on their existing networks. The second reason is that HSPA evolvement could delay the deployment of LTE as it enables MNOs to reach very high speeds with less costs than LTE roll-out.
