Kenya switches to digital broadcasting

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Kenya Broadcasting Corporation had launched Digital Terrestrial TV and has become the second nation in Sub-Saharan Africa to migrate from analogue to digital broadcast after South Africa’s migration accelerated by FIFA World Cup to be held next year.

Mwai Kibaki, President of Kenya, said : “We must use the expanded broadcasting space to build on our national unity and expound on the development agenda.  Let us always remember that the expanded media freedom must never be used to undermine our sense of nationhood as underscored in our national anthem – ‘may we dwell in unity, peace and liberty.”

The government sets the Analogue switch off by year 2012 despite the date set by ITU (International Telecommunications Union) in 2015.
