Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Nigeria, Africa’s most populated country and second largest economy is a promising land for potential growth in mobile communications market, at least in the next five years. In fact, according to Dataxis Intelligence latest publications, the country’s mobile market is expected to grow by 82% between 2009 and 2010, thus adding up roughly 60 million new customers to the currently 73 million mobile subscribers as highlighted in the chart below.

This would bring the national mobile penetration rate up to 70% of the population by 2010 up from 47% in 2009-end. Looking back to historical data also proves to be instructive, as the mobile market in Nigeria experienced an outstanding growth in the last five years, as the number of subscribers quadrupled up from 17 million in 2005. In the same time penetration rate rose from 13% to 47% of the country’s estimated 157 million inhabitants last year.

By and large, during the 2005-2015 decade, Nigeria Mobile market is expected to add 10 million new users on average every year, thus positioning it as the most disputed by potential investors on the continent, despite the ten or so market players that are competing fiercely to survive.
