Egypt: Mobile subscriptions growth continues though decelerating

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The number of mobile phone subscribers in Egypt has reportedly rose to 58.8 million at the end of June 2010 up 2% sequentially which represents a 2% increase or about 1.2 million net additions in the country’s overall cell phone users.

This performance confirms the general trend over several quarters during which the market has kept growing though at a decelerating pace. As a matter of fact, as featured it well the chart below from Dataxis Intelligence, during the last two years the number of mobile subscribers in Egypt rose from 32.2 million in early 2008 to 44.6 million a year later and stood at 57.6 million by the end of first quarter 2010.

In other words, it means that in the referred period of time there were over 25 million registered new subscriptions or an outstanding 79% market growth. This helped the country bring its mobile penetration to nearly 75% of the its 75 million plus inhabitants.
